Best Time to Go 

The best time to visit Tak is during the cool season, from November to February. The weather is pleasant, with cooler temperatures that make outdoor activities like hiking and sightseeing much more enjoyable. 

This period also coincides with events like the Loi Krathong Sai Festival, adding a cultural highlight to your trip. The hot season (March to May) can get quite warm, so plan accordingly if you’re visiting during this time.

How to Get around Tak

Getting around Tak is straightforward with several options that cater to different travel styles:

  • Songthaews and Tuk-Tuks: These are widely available and affordable, making them great for short trips within the town or to nearby attractions. They’re a convenient way to experience local transportation and get around quickly.
  • Motorbike Rentals: If you’re up for some adventure, renting a motorbike is an excellent way to explore Tak’s scenic countryside and visit spots that are off the beaten path. It gives you the freedom to travel at your own pace and discover hidden gems.
  • Car Rentals: Ideal for families or groups, renting a car is perfect for covering longer distances comfortably, especially if you plan to visit multiple attractions or remote areas. It also provides the flexibility to adjust your itinerary on the go.

White House Hotel surprised us with clean, spacious rooms that felt like a breath of fresh air after some of the tiny spots we’ve stayed in. The peaceful location, surrounded by gardens, made it a relaxing stop on our road trip. 

We loved borrowing the free bicycles to explore the area—it was a nice way to stretch our legs after a long drive. Breakfast was simple but satisfying, though we did wish there were more options. 

The lack of an elevator was a bit of a hassle with luggage, but the friendly staff and convenient parking made up for it.

Breakfast is included, and their curry boiled rice often gets rave reviews for being both hearty and flavorful. The entrance can feel a bit narrow, but with grill shops nearby and delivery services like Line Man, convenience is never an issue.

The coffee is rich and perfectly brewed, and the baked goods are fresh and flavorful (don’t skip the bread!). There’s plenty of seating, both indoors and out, so you can pick a spot that matches your mood. 

Parking is hassle-free, thanks to helpful attendants, making this a no-stress stop for anyone travelling on Highway 1.

TARA Kaffee & Patisserie is a charming spot right by the Ping River with fantastic outdoor seating that makes you want to stay all day. The blueberry cheesecake is a standout, though we found the coffee-in-a-paper-cup thing a bit off for such a nice café. 

The garden and riverside setup are perfect for snapping photos or just relaxing with a breeze and a good view. The menu has a nice mix of Thai and Western options, so there’s something for everyone.

Mughal Restaurant delivers bold, flavorful dishes that are perfect for anyone craving North Indian or Pakistani food. The mutton curry and chicken kebabs were absolute standouts, especially paired with fresh naan and stir-fried okra. 

The menu is in English, and the staff is super patient and helpful, which made ordering a breeze. While a few items were unavailable, the dishes we tried more than made up for it. 

Maesot View 360

Maesot View 360 really does justice to its name—the views from the top balcony are breathtaking, especially at sunset when everything is bathed in golden light. 

We loved the relaxed, open vibe of the café, though we were a bit bummed that the coffee machine wasn’t working during our visit (we’ll have to come back for that!). 

The quirky superhero and cartoon figurines scattered around made us smile and were a fun touch for photos. It’s definitely a place to take your time—whether you’re soaking in the views or just enjoying the quirky décor. 

Pro tip: mornings and evenings are best (unless you want to roast in the midday sun)!

Ban Pak Ruk Tawan Restaurant

There’s even a playground, so kids can have their fun while the grown-ups enjoy a relaxed meal. The mountain views and shaded parking add to the chill vibe, making it a great spot to unwind and refuel.

Taksin Maharat National Park is a must-visit for nature lovers, with its lush forests and towering trees, including the famous Krabak tree—largest tree in Thailand. The park has well-maintained trails that are perfect for an easy hike or a relaxed stroll. 

You’ll also find waterfalls and picnic spots along the way, making it a great day out for families or solo adventurers. The peaceful vibe here is unmatched, and it’s a nice break from the usual hustle. 

Hike in Lan Sang National Park

Lan Sang National Park has stunning waterfalls and scenic trails that are perfect for a day hike. The paths are well-marked and take you through lush greenery and rocky landscapes, leading to serene spots like Lan Sang and Pha Lat waterfalls. 

The air here is so fresh, it’s like nature’s version of a detox. It’s quiet, not too crowded, and feels like you’ve found a little piece of paradise. Wear sturdy shoes and bring some water—it’s a proper adventure, but totally worth it.

Admire the Bhumibol Dam

Doi Luang Tak offers some of the best views in the region, especially if you make it there for sunrise or sunset. The hike up isn’t too challenging, but it’s enough to get your heart pumping and your excitement up. 

Once at the top, you’ll be rewarded with sweeping views of the surrounding mountains and valleys—it’s the kind of view that makes you want to pause and just breathe it all in. Bring a jacket—it can get chilly up there!

Mu Soe Hill Tribes Market is such a cool spot to check out if you’re in Tak. It’s buzzing with activity, and you’ll find all sorts of goodies—fresh fruits, veggies, handmade crafts, and even traditional hill tribe clothing. 

The vibe here is super friendly, and haggling a little is totally part of the fun (don’t worry, the sellers are used to it). 

Even if you’re not planning to shop much, it’s a great place to wander around, soak up the atmosphere, and maybe snag a unique souvenir or two.

Robinson Lifestyle Mae Sot

We loved the variety of dining options—whether you’re craving Thai classics or a sweet treat, this place delivers. The kids’ play areas and cinema were a hit with families, though we noticed a few parents hoping for more seating near the play zones. 

It can get pretty busy on weekends, so plan your visit accordingly, but overall, it’s a fantastic hangout for locals and travellers alike.

Big C Tak

The prices are wallet-friendly, which is always a plus, and locals swear by it for its reliability over the years. While it’s not the spot for luxury items, it’s perfect for basics and stocking up before a long drive. 

We’d definitely recommend stopping by if you’re passing through—it’s practical, convenient, and kind of fun to explore.

Lotus’s Tak is a shopping hub that combines convenience with variety, offering everything from groceries to well-known fast-food chains like KFC and Pizza Co. The parking setup is smooth, making it easy to pop in, and the mix of food options means no one has to compromise. 

The ground floor is bustling with retail outlets, while the supermarket upstairs offers a surprising range of international brands. We noticed it can get a bit crowded on weekends, but it’s a go-to spot for travellers on the road between Chiang Mai and Bangkok. 

Makro Mae Sot

Makro Mae Sot is a dream for bulk shoppers, with a massive variety of fresh produce, meats, and snacks at great wholesale prices. The parking is spacious and hassle-free, which is always a win for us. 

We loved the bulk-buy concept—it’s perfect for stocking up, though not ideal if you’re only after a few items. Just remember to bring your own bags, as they don’t provide any. 

Navigating the store feels like a bit of a marathon, but the helpful staff and great deals make it worth the effort—plus, don’t miss the coconut snack shop outside!
