Roi Et is a hidden gem in Thailand’s Northeast, and it’s chill, vibrant, and full of surprises. The city has roots that go way, way back, tracing its history to an ancient Khmer settlement before becoming a bustling hub during the Ayutthaya era.
Today, Roi Et is dotted with gorgeous temples (seriously, the giant Buddha at Wat Burapha Phiram will blow your mind) and waterways. And since it’s in Isan, it makes for a perfect destination for a slice of slow Thai living.
Where is Roi Et?
Roi Et is in Northeastern Thailand, right in the heart of the Isan region. It’s about 500 kilometres from Bangkok. It’s bordered by Kalasin to the north and Yasothon to the south. Maha Sarakhan and Surin are its neighbours on either side.
How to Get to Roi Et
By plane: Roi Et Airport has daily flights from Bangkok’s Don Mueang Airport, and the trip is barely an hour.
By bus: If you prefer a scenic route, you can grab a bus from Mo Chit Bus Terminal in Bangkok. The trip will take about 7 to 8 hours.
By train: You could also hop on a train to nearby cities like Khon Kaen, then ride the bus the rest of the way to Roi Et.
Best Time to Go to Roi Et
The best time to visit Roi Et is during May, when the Bun Bang Fai (Rocket Festival) lights up the region. It’s an incredible event where locals launch massive homemade rockets to pray for rain.
Along with the rocket launches, there are colorful parades, traditional Isan music, and lively dancing, so the place comes alive.

Bueng Phlan Chai is one of Roi Et’s central landmarks. This large, man-made lake is surrounded by lush greenery and pathways. There’s a scenic bridge that offers great views of the park and the shimmering lake, so don’t miss out on walking across it.
You can also rent paddle boats and water bikes to explore the lake further. Check out the island in the middle of the lake—it’s accessible by a bridge leading to the charming Phlan Chai Pavilion.
It’s also a good area for birdwatching, as many water birds flock to the lake.
