Everything You Need to Know about Thanyaburi

Thanyaburi has this quiet charm, mixing modern vibes with a sense of history that goes way back. Historically, it was established as part of King Rama VI’s canal expansion project in the early 20th century, so waterways play a big role in its layout.

Fast forward a bit, and it’s now home to universities, local markets, and that “everyone knows everyone” charm.

By the way, the name “Thanyaburi” comes from the Thai word meaning “wealthy city”, which is fitting because it’s rich in tradition, community, and just a generally chill atmosphere.

Where is Thanyaburi?

Thanyaburi is just a short drive north of Bangkok, so it’s super easy to get to if you’re in the city. It’s part of Pathum Thani province, kind of hugging the eastern edge of the Bangkok Metropolitan Region.

It’s bordered by Rangsit to the west, Lam Luk Ka to the south, and a bunch of green, open spaces to the east and north.

The well-known Rangsit Canal cuts right through, and it’s one of the things that gives the area its roots in agriculture and canal life. It’s where the city starts to meet the countryside!

How to Get to Thanyaburi

Closest subway stop: Getting to Thanyaburi is super easy, whether you’re coming from Bangkok or anywhere nearby. If you’re starting out in central Bangkok, you can hop on the BTS Skytrain to the last stop on the Sukhumvit Line, which is Rangsit Station.

From there, grab a taxi or local bus—it’s just a quick ride to get into Thanyaburi. If you’re driving, the easiest way is to take Phahonyothin Road (Thailand’s Highway Route 1), heading north out of Bangkok.

It’s a straight shot, and you’ll hit Thanyaburi in around 30-40 minutes, depending on traffic. Oh, and if you’re into exploring, there are plenty of little side roads and canals to check out along the way!

Best Time to Go to Thanyaburi

The best time to visit Thanyaburi is in November, right at the start of the dry season. One event you definitely shouldn’t miss is the Loy Krathong Festival, which is celebrated all across Thailand but feels extra special at Rajamangala University of Technology Thanyaburi (RMUTT).

Loy Krathong usually happens on the full moon night of the twelfth month in the Thai lunar calendar. It’s all about floating beautiful, lotus-shaped baskets (called krathongs) on the water as a way of giving thanks to the water goddess.

At RMUTT, the celebration has a really warm and friendly vibe, with candle-lit krathongs, traditional performances, music, and an all-around magical atmosphere that makes that experience unforgettable.
